Day One of the 2019 Socca World Cup always promised to be something special – and events at the Leisure Leagues Stadium in Rethymno certainly didn’t disappoint.
Packed crowds of thousands – both locals and excited fans from around the world – were there to witness the action, which got underway with Egypt beating Latvia 2-1.
There was, though a massive shock, as Germany, who won the World Cup in 2018, beginning their defence with a 3-1 loss at the hands of an impressive Hungary side.
Poland, were defeated Germany in that tight final last year got off to a winning start, beating Morocco 3-1.
Elsewhere some of the favourites for the trophy showed why, with both Russia and France recording impressive victories against India and Iraq respectively.
Scotland prevailed in the all-Celtic clash, beating Ireland 4-0.
The action continued all night too, with experienced teams and new-boys catching the eye. Colombia celebrated their first appearance at a world cup, by seeing off Algeria 3-0 and Kazakhstan prevailing by the odd goal in three against Slovakia in an all eastern European clash.
